A woman named Eden Fox leaves her house for her daily run with nothing but her house key (cmon girl, no phone for safety precautions in 2026?) and when she returns home, her house key doesn’t work. A woman looking alarmingly like Eden answers the door and claims that she IS Eden and that this is her home. The Boy-Faced Cop doesn’t believe an ounce of this bologna and thinks this fake Eden woman (which one is fake?) is cuckoo bananas. Then somehow both women go missing and a body turns up and the Boy-Cop and his new Lady-Boss can’t figure it out.
Early on, I felt like I knew what was happening. Then a few chapters later I had no idea what was happening. A couple more chapters and I was confused and absorbed. By 3/4 through the story I forgot that I’m supposed to do things like sleep. I woke up at 6am for no reason but it was the best morning because I was able to finish the book and wow just wow.
I never saw the ending coming.
Great story
Great twists (I was blindsided at least 3 times)
Great pacing (so fast-moving)
Great layered characters. (DCI Bird… you dirty dog)
“Thanatos” made me think of “Theranos” and then I wondered if that inspired Alice Feeney’s choice of business name.
