North Falls is a quiet town that likes to believe it has nothing to hide. Then two teenage girls disappear the night of the fireworks and everything slowly begins to unravel over the next 12 years.
Officer Emmy Clifton can’t shake the guilt because one of those girls was her best friend’s daughter and Emmy missed the signs. But as she starts to untangle the trail they left behind, it becomes clear nobody really knew who these girls were.
Or what they were capable of.
Every small town has secrets. In North Falls, some are worth killing for.
I’m unfortunately notoriously judgmental of police procedure books and find them boring (maybe I’m weird). I especially shy away if they are a series. I love Karin Slaughter’s books PRETTY GIRLS, FALSE WITNESS and PIECES OF HER and but was not a huge fan of the Will Trent series (although I loved the tv show version).
The story was terrifying and visceral and emotional because I found myself fully invested in the characters.
I surprisingly enjoyed the police procedural element of this story. Maybe it’s because I liked the layers of Emmy’s personality of balancing police professionalism and also typical human emotions. Going along for the ride of the actual investigative process and how things unfolded for the crimes was interesting to me. The way things connected without being so direct was well done.
